Question by Brad: Why do people often cite education as something only government can provide?
Often, I have heard people defend the necessity of government by arguing that government is necessary to provide the “public good” of education. I have actually heard people argue that, unless the government collects taxes to fund a “free” government education system, nobody will be able to get an education.

Obviously, this can be disproven on empirical grounds, even in our current society where government requires everybody to pay for government schools, whether or not they send their kids to those particular schools. The fact that many people are willing to pay twice for education by either homeschooling their kids or sending them to a private school (yes, the private sector can provide schools).

Even the slightly more mild form of the argument for government education (that not everybody will get an education if government doesn’t run its own schools) is spurious. Granting, for the sake of argument, that the claim that, without government spending on education, many children would be unable to get an education (although I don’t think this claim is true either), that is not a good argument for government to run its own school system. In fact, the government could almost certainly save alot of money and achieve the same or better educational results by giving out vouchers to pay tuition for any private school. To use the example of Washington, DC, if the politicians in Washington, DC wanted to do so, they could send every kid in DC to the elitist private school that the president’s daughters attend for roughly the same amount of money they already spend at their government schools (considering that Obama has chosen not to send his kids to the DC government schools, I think we all know which school provides a better education).

Politicians talk all the time about how they want to eliminate “waste, fraud, and abuse” in the government in this country. If they are serious about doing this, how about getting the government out of the business of building and operating schools, something which it has proven it cannot do efficiently? If you truly believe that children would be unable to get an education in a pure free market, then how about replacing the government’s socialized schools program with a government handout program? That would be, at the very least, less of a drain on the taxpayers than the current money sink.

This first lecture of the series sets the analytic stage for the series. After reviewing the panoply of social changes observable in the history of higher education, the lecturer focuses on a key composite type: structural accretion, or the continued addition of new functions and structures without shedding old ones. A historical sweep of accretions is reviewed. Simple as it is, the notion is a profound one, and it ramifies throughout colleges and universities. Among these ramifications are a pattern of endemic conflicts, profound reorganizations of faculty activities, and changes in the academic community. The lecture also presents an analysis of two quintessential accretions, the academic department organized research institutes and centers. ~~~ The lecture series was established in 2001 under the auspices of the Center for Studies in Higher Education on the Berkeley campus. Initial funding for the lectures was provided by the University of California’s Office of the President, and subsequently major complementary funding has been received from the Carnegie Corporation. The Center for Studies in Higher Education has established an agreement with the University of California Press for publication of the second and future lectures. The 2012 Clark Kerr lecturer will be Neil Smelser, one of the most distinguished and accomplished leaders of American Higher Education and recognized as a profound observer of higher education. He joined the UC Berkeley faculty in 1958 and has …
I am a woman, business owner. Looking for funds for my new business. A lot of thing already done, but without means I cannot hire right people to help me and there is no way to advertise aggressively.
All grant ads online offer 7 day trial , after that $ 39.95 site membership fees. Maybe free money for women-business owner do not exist at all?
Any advise will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Answer by Brutus
For a government grant, go to http://grants.gov/ and follow the instructions. What you are going to find is that unless you are involved in daycare, basic research or energy, there are none.

These days as the economy struggles more organizations are looking for ways to raise funds for projects they have planned. Even non profits holding fundraisers are something that we are seeing more often as well. There are many different types of fundraisers that non profits are using today. Let us look at some of the most popular fundraising projects that non profit organizations use in a down economy.

One of the newest ways to raise money is through liquidation merchandise. Many companies purchase unsold inventory from companies that are going out of business and sell it to non profit organizations. It gives them something to offer that many times cannot be bought anywhere else. When it comes to fundraising variety is the key. The liquidation merchandise give fundraising organizations something different from the same things they usually sell.

Look for this trend to continue to grow in popularity.

Another non profits fundraising favorite is selling restaurant books to the public. Everyone these days have less and less time to fix meals at home, so selling restaurant books just makes sense. These are a very easy sell as most of the time these books have some of the most popular restaurants that people visit. Having discounted coupons have been used for years and with the idea of saving money at your favorite restaurant sales can only soar. Fundraising continues to change through the years as organizations try to raise money in good and bad economic times. As products change profit margins as well are adjusted by these organizations.
